The Family Medicine Chest

Remember that you can treat many minor ailments such as colds, coughs and indigestion by keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet at home. We suggest you keep the following:

bullet Paracetamol and aspirin (children under 16 and people with asthma should not take aspirin) 
bullet Mild laxatives
bullet Anti-diarrhoeal medicines
bullet Rehydration mixture
bullet Indigestion remedy (for example, antacids)
bullet Travel sickness tablets
bullet Sunscreen – SPF15 or higher
bullet Sunburn treatment (for example, calamine)
bullet Tweezers and sharp scissors
bullet A thermometer
bullet A selection of plasters, non- absorbent cotton wool, elastic bandages and dressings.
bullet Menthol Crystals - add to hot water top make steam inhalations. Also useful for children, catarrh and dry or painful coughs.

Remember:

bulletKeep the medicine chest in a secure, locked place out of reach of small children.
bulletAlways read the instructions and use the suggested dose
bulletWatch expiry dates – don’t keep or use medicines past their sell-by date
bulletTake all unwanted and out-of-date medicines back to the pharmacy
